Hoskie Benally is one of the featured storytellers in the PBS series, Circle of Stories. He tells of his work as the CEO of Our Youth, Our Future, Inc., a chemical dependency treatment program for Native American youth. The program is based on a philosophy that integrates both Western and Native American practices in order to help Native American youth rediscover pride in themselves and their heritage. Benally goes on to tell a story about the five sacred medicines – cedar, sage, yucca, tobacco and eagle feathers – and why these are so important in Native American ceremonies. It is a story of survival, courage, stamina and resilience – values he passes on to the youth in his treatment program. To learn more about Hoskie Benally, the Navajo people, their land and their language and to hear Benally tell the story of the five sacred medicines in his own words, log on to http://www.pbs.org/circleofstories/
