Goals

Our long-term goal is to promote improved electoral participation by Native Americans with disabilities in local, state, and national elections.

Our intermediate-term goal is to improve the awareness and understanding of local and state election officials about the historical and cultural barriers to electoral participation for Native Americans with disabilities.

The short-term goals are to improve the knowledge and awareness of P&As about the historical and cultural barriers to electoral participation for Native Americans with disabilities.

Objectives

  1. Provide training to P&A representatives on the historical and cultural barriers to electoral participation for Native Americans with disabilities.
  2. Provide technical assistance to P&A representatives on how to provide effective outreach to Native Americans with disabilities.
  3. Provide useful information that P&A representatives can provide to local and state election officials that will improve their awareness and understanding of the historical and cultural barriers to electoral participation by Native Americans with disabilities.

Activities to Meet the Goals and Objectives of this Project

  1. A needs assessment conducted among P&A representatives to determine the degree of awareness and understanding of historical and cultural barriers to voting for Native Americans with disabilities.
  2. Electronic dissemination of bi-monthly Tip Sheets and a training guide.
  3. An Internet website containing project publications, other reference materials, teleconference information, and related events.
  4. An on-line Discussion Board for P&A representatives to post questions and hold threaded discussions on topics pertaining to improving electoral participation for Native Americans with disabilities.
  5. Teleconferences (at least three) with experts to discuss issues related to electoral participation for Native Americans with disabilities.
